Dodgers, Rangers join Angels in market for Rays righty Shields

The rival Rangers and Dodgers have joined the Angels in the hunt for Big Game James Shields, sources told CBSSports.com.

All three teams have made offers but the Rays are waiting for someone to do better for the former All-Star right-hander.

While the Angels have long been tied to Shields, it turns out arguably their two biggest rivals also have interest.

The Rays have told teams they would listen on three coeveted right-handers, including Jeremy Hellickson and Wade Davis, but Shields is the logical candidate to go since he's 30 and has a $9 million team option for 2013, pricey for the Rays but reasonable for big-market teams.

The Angels and Rays have discussed young center fielder Peter Bourjos, who is available thanks to the emergence of 20-year-old superstar Mike Trout and isn't off to a great start, but the Rays have made it clear Bourjos alone isn't enough. The Rangers have plenty of fine young players to do any deal.

The Dodgers have long been seen as a favorite for Ryan Dempster, and they are in seemingly good position there since Dempster rejected an agreed-upon deal to the Braves, his supposed second choice. Their biggest focus remains on Dempster, and maybe Matt Garza. But they are definitely in the mix for Shields, as well.

Shields is 8-6 with a 4.39 ERA, and one scout told Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, "His stuff is still good but he hasn't had Shields-like command.'' Still, in this market he is a very good attraction.

The Rangers have interest in Zack Greinke and Josh Johnson. The price for those two may be even higher, however.

The starting pitching market is continuing to evolve, with Cole Hamels off the board, Dempster's intentions somewhat clearer and Garza starting Monday at the earliest. The trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m.
