Yankees will pick up Granderson's option (but may wait to talk about a longer deal)

The Yankees will exercise the $15-million club option for Curtis Granderson for 2013 despite his poor postseason.

However, the Yankees now seem disinclined to try to negotiate a long-term extension for Granderson, who can become a free agent after the 2014 season. The Yankees aim to get their payroll below the luxury-tax threshhold of $189 million in 2014 to lower their tax rate and save them tens of millions.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said no final decisions have been made, and they will meet to discuss all the players.

Granderson's $13-million option increased by $2 million after he finished fourth in the 2011 MVP race. He hit 43 home runs with 106 RBI and a .232 batting average before becoming one of several Yankees to slump in the postseason. He was 3 for 30 (.100) with 16 strikeouts in the playoffs.
