Early Marlins call goes to ex-catcher Mike Redmond; he could replace Guillen as manager

The Miami Marlins, quickly moving on from the Ozzie Guillen era, have requested and received permission to interview Blue Jays minor-league manager Mike Redmond, sources say.

Redmond, a Marlins catcher from 1998-2004, appears to be an early favorite to replace Guillen, who was dismissed Tuesday after one year. Joe Fisaro of MLB.com called Redmond "a strong frontrunner."

The Marlins appear to be focused on young candidates after the Guillen reign failed spectacularly. Ex-Marlins star Mike Lowell, who was expected to draw interest from the Marlins, told CBSSports.com earlier this month that he isn't interested at this point.

The Marlins' plan remains to consider and interview other candidates for the job.

Redmond, 41, draws raves from his former bosses. "He is going to be really good. He's a former catcher who was paying attention," one major-league executive said. The one question regarding the Class A Dunedin manager is a lack of experience managing above that level. Dunedin is a "high" A club but far from the big leagues, obviously.

Redmond also receives praise for connecting with players and knowing pitching. Redmond was a .287 career hitter who was also known for a very high fiedling percentage in a 13-year career, mostly as a backup.

The Blue Jays have a policy where they always grant employees permission for jobs of adavancement, and they even let major-league manager John Farrell go to the Red Sox for the same job in Boston since it was a "dream job" for him.

Guillen was fired after his initial 69-93 season in Miami, and will be paid the $7.5 million remaining on his contract through 2015. Marlins bosses were disappointed by his inability to create a "winning culture."

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, who made the calls to hire and fire Guillen, was surprised at how much Guillen delegated to his coach Joey Cora, who also fell out of favor with Loria and was dismissed as well. One Marlins player said it was his impression that Guillen "lost" the clubhouse over his "negatvity."
