Dodgers are targeting Kuroda and Sanchez for the rotation

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The Dodgers are gaining a reputation as the biggest spenders in baseball, but neither of their top two pitching targets is the biggest name on the market Zack Greinke.

The Dodgers are targeting Hiroki Kuroda and Anibal Sanchez as their main pitching targets, according to people familiar with their thinking.

This news should be of some comfort to the Angels, who internally have wondered whether their crosstown rival might try to blow them out of the water on Greinke, who is clearly their far and away No. 1 winter goal.

The Dodgers are likely to at least look at Greinke, Kyle Lohse and others, as they are determined to land at least one starting pitcher -- and maybe two -- but indications are strong that Kuroda, the former Dodger, and Sanchez are their guys.

They love Kuroda and only let him go when GM Ned Colletti was asked to trim their payroll $20 million over two years. Obviously, times have changed in L.A.

There's no assurance Kuroda is likely to return, though, so they need to be involved with a few pitchers. Kuroda didn't want to leave L.A. after 2011, but now he is said to have enjoyed pitching for the Yankees, who seem to think their biggest competition may come from Japan. Kuroda is said willing to do a one-year deal because he wants at some point to return to pitch in Japan with something left.

The Red Sox also are interested in Kuroda, but they may be a longer shot than the two teams with which Kuroda is familiar.

Sanchez is another pitcher coveted by the Dodgers, and they should expect to have stiff competition from the Tigers and others for Sanchez after his very nice second half and postseason in Detroit.
