Ross has long been connected to the Phillies, but Wells is a new name. As with any team trading with the Angels for Wells, they'd expect the Angels to pick up the vast majority of the $42 million left on Wells' contract through 2014.
The Phillies seek a right-handed-hitting outfielder, particularly one who might be able to bat fifth in the lineup, behind cleanup man Ryan Howard.
Ross is said by a friend of his to have a "ton of interest,'' not surprising considering his very nice season with the Red Sox. The Angels are looking to trade Wells, who is deep on their bench following their surprise signing of superstar Josh Hamilton.
The Yankees had been linked to Wells previously.
Nick Swisher, a switch hitter, would also fit Philly's needs. But he would presumably be pricier than Ross or Wells. The Phillies have filled several holes. Swisher might be a tight fit if they hope to remain under the luxury-tax threshold, as they have been.
