Showalter extension may add three years to his Orioles deal

Manager Buck Showalter's contract extension, which may be announced next week, is expected to be for three years, which would keep him in Baltimore through the 2016 season, people familiar with the talks suggested.

Showalter flew up from his Dallas area home to meet with Orioles owner Peter Angelos on Friday, MASN Sports and other Baltimore-area media outlets reported. The meeting was believed to be a final step toward a new deal for Showalter, who guided the Orioles to a stunning 93-69 record in 2012, their first winning season since 1997. Sources suggested the deal remained on track as of late Friday.

Showalter's current salary of $1.5 million, according to Cots Baseball Contracts, ranks him in the middle of the pack among managers.

Showalter was nipped by equally deserving A's manager Bob Melvin for Manager of the Year honors, but no one could have disputed it had he won the award for a third time. The Orioles' 29-9 record in one-run games was the best in the majors since 1882, and what's more, they won an even more remarkable 16 straight extra-inning games. The O's also were 25-14 in two-run games, further highlighting a season of superior bullpen work and strategy.

Showalter's Orioles made the playoffs as a wild-card entry, beating the Rangers in the wild-card game before being eliminated by a more experienced, higher-paid yankees team in the Division Series in five games.

They should benefit from an extra year of experience, and a full year of play for young infielder Manny Machado and starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez. The Orioles are still looking to possibly add one hitter (either an outfielder or DH) and a starting pitcher.
