Tigers eye RP Gregerson, but Headley, Street likely to stay in SD

Padres stars Chase Headley, Carlos Quentin and Huston Street seem likely to stay in San Diego, but with major interest in setup-man extraordinaire Luke Gregerson as the deadline approaches, he seems to have a good chance to be dealt.

The Tigers, who've had bullpen questions most of the year, are known to have Gregerson on their radar, and two or three more teams are said to be in heavy pursuit of the righthander who's 4-5 with a 2.98 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Gregerson isn't a free agent until after 2015, giving him significant value.

The Padres' biggest need would be for young starting pitchers as they have a solid, deep group of position players.

The Padres have not suggested to anyone Headley's available, and with new owner Ron Fowler on record as preferring to sign him long-term, the chances for a Headley deal seem remote at this point. The Yankees are among several teams that have called, and he'd fit the Red Sox just as well.

Quentin, a San Diego native, and Street both re-signed with San Diego within the past year, and it appears the Padres aren't actively shopping the two players and feel no great motivation to move either one.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Edinson Volquez, lefty reliever Joe Thatcher (Braves?), outfielders Chris Denorfia (Rangers?), Will Venable and Kyle Blanks plus useful utilityman Logan Forsythe are drawing some interest and are being discussed.
