Chase Utley, Phillies discussing multiyear deal for about $13M a year

Chase Utley and the Phillies have been discussing deals for three years or two years plus a vesting option for a third that would pay him in the neighborhood of $13 million a year, sources said.

Thirteen million represents a raise as Utley is finishing up an $85-million, seven-year deal.

Leading up to the trade deadline, the Phillies have been telling teams Utley is unavailable as they aim to lock him up on the multiyear deal. People familiar with the negotiations suggest the offers were modeled after Carlos Beltran's $13 million a year deal with the Cardinals, though Beltran's is a straight two-year deal.

Phillies believe love Utley and what he means to the team, referring to him as their "franchise" player. Like Beltran, he has chronic knee issues but performed through them. Utley, 34, is hitting .277 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI.
