Ausmus, Renteria join McClendon, Wallach as Tigers candidates

ST. LOUIS -- The Tigers plan to interview Padres executive Brad Ausmus and Padres bench coach Rick Renteria for their managerial opening, bringing to four the known candidates for the coveted job to replace legendary manager Jim Leyland, sources familiar with the situation told CBSSports.com.

The Tigers previously have interviewed Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach plus their own hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, who also talked with the Mariners.

Ausmus, who interviewed for the Nationals job that went to Matt Williams, is expected to meet this week with Tigers people. Ausmus has no major-league managing or coaching experience but was an 18-year major-league player as a catcher for a few teams, including the Tigers, and is very well respected. Ausmus has been seen as a logical choice for Detroit since he has history there.

Renteria, who managed team Mexico in the WBC, is a candidate with the Cubs and Mariners. In Chicago, he and A.J. Hinch, a Padres executive, are viewed as favorites, with Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo still to be interviewed. If Renteria is hired elsewhere first, it could be possible for him to forgo a Tigers interview, though that is seen as a plum job.

To this point, the Tigers haven't approached the Diamondbacks about former Tigers star and current D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson. While Arizona wasn't overjoyed with its 81-81 record, Gibson is under contract for 2014 and the Diamondbacks hold options for 2014 and '15, and the Diamondbacks are said to have little interest in letting him manage elsewhere.
