Mariners interview Giants bench coach Wotus for manager's job

ST. LOUIS -- The Mariners have interviewed Giants bench coach Ron Wotus for their managerial opening, sources said.

Wotus, 52, has been the Giants' bench coach since 1999.

Seattle is said to have a long list of candidates, with Wotus joining A's bench coach Chip Hale, Padres bench coach Rick Renteria and Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon among those known to have been interviewed so far.

Renteria is a candidate for the managerial jobs with the Cubs and Tigers, as well, while McClendon is also a candidate to replace the legendary Jim Leyland in Detroit.

Wotus was first reported to be a candidate for the Mariners job a few weeks ago by CBSSports.com. The job was vacated when Eric Wedge informed the Mariners he would not be returning to manage them after three seasons.

Mariners people say Wedge sought a multiyear extension before deciding to leave the job, but Wedge said the reason he left the job was a less than functional setup in Seattle.
