Yankees and Cardinals have talked about a David Freese trade

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Yankees and Cardinals are believed to have discussed a deal involving St. Louis third baseman David Freese, sources confirm.

The Yankees appear to be planning for 2014 as if they won't have Alex Rodriguez, who is fighting a 211-game PED suspension. The Cardinals could possibly move Matt Carpenter to third base and play Kolten Wong at second base.

Freese' stature has fallen a bit since winning the 2011 World Series MVP, and he batted as low as seventh in the Cardinals' World Series lineup. Freese had the game-tying two-run triple in the ninth inning of Game 6 of the 2011 World Series vs. Texas, then hit the game-winning walkoff home run two innings later.

Freese, 30, hit .260 with nine homers and 60 RBI in 2013.

The talks were first reported by the New York Daily News.
