Twins in on Arroyo, Nolasco, Garza, Pelfrey, Hughes and all who start

The Twins are said by people familiar with their situation to have inquired about just about every available starting pitcher. Although Bronson Arroyo, Ricky Nolasco and ex-Twin Matt Garza have been linked to the Twins most often, they've also inquired about other top starters like Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez as well as several others a bit lower on the free-agent list, including Phil Hughes, Scott Feldman and their own Mike Pelfrey.

Ultimately, the rebuilding Twins may be somewhat less likely to pony up for Jimenez or Santana than Garza, Nolasco or Arroyo, as they are quite cognizant of the draft choice attached to Santana and Jimenez. But they are covering the gamut with their pursuits.

It isn't known whether they are one of the reported teams to be interested in Nolasco at four years, but they almost surely would be in there at three. They are also known to be a team to have offered Pelfrey a multi-year deal, though the sides are still believed to be apart on the annual salary.

The Twins' free-agent interest in starting pitching shouldn't come as a surprise. Their starters combined to go 39-74 in 2013 with a worst-in-the-sport 5.26 ERA. Yes, worse than the Astros.
