Phillies, Jays, Pirates, Rangers, O's, Twins and Yankees watch Santana

Recovering two-time Cy Young winner Johan Santana met expectations and looked fine, according to a scout in attendance, during a bullpen session for at least seven teams -- including the Orioles, Yankees, Rangers, Twins, Pirates, Phillies and Blue Jays.

Another early report cited low radar-gun readings to suggest that perhaps he didn't have much (with velocity in the high 80s, topping out at 81), but one scout who saw him throw in Fort Myers said he appears in excellent shape and just needs to build arm strength. The first report, in the New York Post, did note that Santana's calling-card pitch, the changeup, looked "impressive."

Santana, 34, was throwing only his third bullpen session following his second shoulder surgery, so expectations should be low. Santana, once the highest-paid pitcher in the majors following a $137.5 million Mets deal, is aiming for a June return. Santana's two Cy Young awards came in Minnesota.

He went 46-34 for the Mets, including the only no-hitter in Mets history. Santana underwent his second surgery on April 1, 2013, and has vowed to return.
