Gordon works out for dad's ex-team though he won't slide to Phillies

Nicholas Gordon, the top high school shortstop in Thursday's MLB Draft, recently agreed to work out for the Phillies in a decision that was more about family friendship and loyalty than draft strategy.

The Gordon family, through patriarch Tom Gordon, the relief pitcher, has a close relationship with Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, shortstop Jimmy Rollins and other Phillies people from Gordon's three years pitching there (2006-08). So Nicholas worked out for them even though he decided to skip the Florida high school All-Star Game and other requested club workouts and is seen as extremely unlikely to last until the Phillies pick at No. 7 in the amateur draft, anyway.

Beyond the positive history with the family, the Phillies may have interest in looking for an heir apparent to long-time star Jimmy Rollins, but Gordon is thought very unlikely to last past the Twins at No. 5, if he gets even that far. There was a rumor Gordon, from Orlando (Fla.) Olympia High School, might be even No. 1 overall to the Astros, but it seems clear there's no deal to this point with Houston and most draft experts still see Houston taking one of the top two pitchers, either San Diego high school lefthander Brady Aiken or North Carolina State lefthander Carlos Rodon.

If the Phillies do have particular interest in a future shortstop, they could instead look at Rodon's teammate Trea Turner, a speedster, at No. 7.

Gordon going to the Phillies to replace would be a nice story, as the whole Gordon family befriended Rollins while Tom pitched there. Dee Gordon, another son of Tom's and the Dodgers second baseman, has an especially close relationship with Rollins.

But alas, Gordon's stock appears to be rising too fast for the Phillies to have a realistic chance to grab him.
