The Padres haven't said yet why they are scratching ace starter Andrew Cashner from Monday's start at San Francisco, but word is his shoulder is feeling a bit sore.

The team is merely being cautious, according to a Padres source. However, the continuation of an arm concern, however minor, is a blow to the Padres, who are looking to improve after firing GM Josh Byrnes and may well hold a sale this summer.

Cashner has been cited in various reports as potentially the Padres' most valuable trade chip, and perhaps this is just a blip in a long season. But any injury that requires a turn in the rotation to be skipped will get notice, especially since Cashner has had some elbow and shoulder trouble over the past couple of years.

If healthy, Cashner is one of the more talented young pitchers in baseball. His 2-6 record doesn't reflect his performance in 2014, when he's pitched to a 2.36 ERA.

But there's a question whether he's eager to stay long-term with the Padres (Foxsports.com reported he has rejected long-term overtures) so a potential trade doesn't seem illogical.

Cuban import Odrisamer Despaigne has been called up from Triple-A El Paso and will start in Cashner's place, as Tim Dierkes of mlbtraderumors.com reported.

There is time for Cashner to get back on the mound and improve his stock, of course. But this doesn't help matters at the moment.
