Chipper optimistic he'll be back in two weeks following blood-draining procedure

By Scott Miller | Senior Baseball Columnist
ATLANTA -- Chipper Jones' left leg looks like hell. Mid-shin down, particularly on the inside, his entire leg is one massive bruise. Reddish in some spots and blue-ish in others, it wraps around the leg and extends all the way down to the inside of his left foot.

Bad as it looks, though, Jones says it feels much better after he underwent a procedure Saturday in which doctors cut an incision and then drained 120 ccs of blood.

Jones, placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, said that doctors told him without the procedure, it may have been Labor Day before the blood cleared up from that part of his leg. He could have played before then, but had he fouled another ball off of the shin the way he fouled a pitch off of it last week in Cincinnati.

He can't move too well, which is why he said the move was made to put him on the DL. He can hit -- he always can hit -- but if he reached base, then manager Fredi Gonzalez would have had to pinch run, and then that would have taken two players out of Atlanta's already short-handed rotation with one play.

"I feel so much better now," Jones said Sunday following the blood-draining procedure. "It was throbbing. It was letting me know it with everything that I did."

As Jones said, "A lot of blood needs to be manipulated to other places."

He's confident that that'll happen quickly enough to allow him to play when he's eligible to come off of the disabled list two weeks from now.

"I think so," he said. "I couldn't swear to it.

"If I'm not ready, I'll be fairly close."
