Jason Marquis joins Padres, will face Giants on Thursday

By Scott Miller | Senior Baseball Columnist
SAN DIEGO -- Jason Marquis is poised to add another line on the back of his baseball card. The veteran pitcher who flamed out with the Twins earlier this season is in San Diego now and will start the Padres' series finale against the Giants on Thursday afternoon.

"He's a very good competitor and he's excited for this opportunity," Padres manager Bud Black said. "The dust has settled on a lot of the things that happened with his daughter in spring training.

"It's a situation where this gets him a fresh start, it gets him back to the National League and he can get his career going again."

Marquis took an extended leave of absence from the Twins in March when his daughter Reese, 7, was seriously injured in a bicycle accident, suffered internal bleeding and was sedated for nine days. She was in the hospital for "17, 18 days, and her recovery has been amazing," Marquis said Wednesday.

"The support and positive energy we received from family, friends and the baseball community ... people tend to do good things in bad situations," Marquis said.

He was away from the Twins for awhile this spring, started the season with Double-A New Britain while working to get his pitch count back up and he never was able to figure things out. The Twins, who signed him to a one-year deal worth $3 million, released him after seven starts, with Marquis 2-4 with an 8.47 ERA.

"I don't want to sit here and make excuses," Marquis, 33, said. "I just didn't pitch well.

"As you get older, you work on things and figure things out during spring training. I wasn't able to do that."

Marquis, who also has pitched for the Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Rockies, Nationals and Diamondbacks, is 106-102 lifetime with a 4.63 ERA.
