Dodgers strengthen pen by acquiring League from Seattle

By Scott Miller | Senior Baseball Columnist

Gearing up for the stretch run, the Dodgers acquired reliever Brandon League from the Mariners late Monday night in an effort to strengthen their bullpen for what is expected to be a hard-fought stretch-run battle with the San Francisco Giants.

In exchange, they sent two minor-leaguers to Seattle, outfielder Leon Landry and right-hander Logan Bawcom.

League, 29, was 0-5 with a 3.69 ERA and nine saves this season but nevertheless was one of the most sought after relievers in the hours leading up to Tuesday's 4 p.m. EDT non-waivers trade deadline. The Giants, White Sox and Rangers were among what was described by one source as "more than a handful" of clubs engaging Seattle in talks.

League's 180 appearances since the start of the 2010 season rank tied for first among AL relievers. He ranked second among AL relievers last season in games finished (60) and third in saves (37) last season.

Since June 13, he's allowed only two earned runs over 16 1/3 innings pitched. His 46 appearances ranked tied for 12th among AL relievers this summer and he was tied for 16th with 44 2/3 innings pitched.

Desperate to add some hitters to their organization, the Mariners are hoping that Landry, 22, will be a player. At the Dodgers' High-A ball affiliate in Rancho Cucamonga this season, Landry, 22, was batting .328 with 26 doubles, 15 triples, eight homers and 51 RBI in 80 games. He's split time between left and center field, and the 15 triples leads all of minor-league baseball. A lefty, Landry is 5-11 and 190 pounds and was a third-round pick by the Dodgers in 2010.

Bawcom, 23, was a combined 4-4 with 20 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 39 relief appearances with Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga. The 6-2, 200-pound right-hander was a 17th-round draft pick by the Dodgers in 2010.
