Giants sending 10 players to World Baseball Classic

By Scott Miller | Senior Baseball Columnist

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Giants have won two World Series titles in three seasons, and it's reached the point where you might say they are the world.

At least, no team is expected to contribute more than the whopping 10 players San Francisco is shipping to the World Baseball Classic later this month.

Included on provisional rosters for the WBC are third baseman Pablo Sandoval, second baseman Marco Scutaro and reliever Jose Mijares (Venezuela), outfielders Andres Torres and Angel Pagan and reliever Javier Lopez (Puerto Rico), starter Ryan Vogelsong and reliever Jeremy Affeldt (Team USA), reliever Santiago Casilla (Dominican Republic) and closer Sergio Romo (Mexico).

Hitting coach Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens also is leaving to instruct hitters on Team Netherlands.

“This means a lot to these players, to represent their country,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Imcumbent upon Bochy and the Giants staff will be managing these players both before and after they play in the WBC. Maintaining players' health and making sure they're rested enough to make it through a 162-game schedule always is an inexact science, but perhaps never more so than in springs in which the WBC is staged.

“What we have to concentrate on more than anything is making sure that they're ready to play,” Bochy said.

In an effort to do that, and to compensate for the time these players will be away at the WBC in March, the Giants will have a whopping 70 players in camp this spring -- including a total of 37 pitchers.

“As far as guys leaving, it makes it easier when you have pretty much the same club back from last year,” Bochy said.

He knows the players, they know him, and they know each other.

The chemistry, mostly, already is there. Now the trick will be getting everyone back in one piece.
