Bull Pennings: Rays' Maddon moving quickly toward procedure

By Scott Miller | Senior Baseball Columnist

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nothing like three total off days all spring … and spending one of them getting a colonoscopy.

Not only is inimitable Rays manager Joe Maddon doing just that on Wednesday, he's brave enough to talk about it. With a wry smile and several double entendres.

“It's one of those things you have to have done,” Maddon said. “Why walk away from it? Why turn your back to it?”

It will be a first for the 59-year-old manager.

“I'm very excited about this,” he said. “I've only heard about it. One of those life experiences you must go through as a young male -- or anybody, actually.”

Maddon managed Tuesday's game against the Twins here but left early to begin preparations for Wednesday's procedure.

“I want to get moving rather quickly,” he said, wry smile returning. “I don't want to mess this up.”

Because he could only ingest fluids on Tuesday, he said he stopped by a Port Charlotte Walgreen's and grabbed all of the chicken broth that was on the shelf.

So be warned, Port Charlotte residents.

“Anybody going in there to augment their soups or gravies, they're out of luck,” Maddon said. “They're cleaned out.”

Sunblock Day? Absolutely. A gorgeous 73 degrees.

Likes: Former manager Tom Kelly in Twins camp as an instructor and still respecting the game. What else would you expect? We talked Tuesday morning, and he was very enthusiastic about the youngsters in camp, the new coaches and how people are doing things right. As in, paying attention to detail and doing the little things. … The chicken parmigiana at Nino's Italian Restaurant. … The smell of lighter fluid firing up grills at Hammond Stadium, spring home of the Twins. Sadly, I didn't make it out for a bratwurst on Tuesday. … Snagged tickets to see Gaslight Anthem out west in April. Fired up -- I've been wanting to see them for two or three years. ... By far, the Eagles' most underrated song is Ol '55, written by the great Tom Waits.

Dislikes: Fort Myers traffic -- far worse than it has a right to be. … Former outfielder Ron LeFlore losing a leg. Yikes. My buddy, Jim Hawkins, who covered LeFlore and the Tigers in the 1970s, with the story.

Rock ‘n' Roll Lyric of the Day:

“Pale invaders and tanned crusaders

“Are worshipping the sun

“On the corner of 'walk' and 'don't walk'

“Somewhere on US 1

“I'm back to livin' Floridays

“Blue skies and ultra-violet rays

“Lookin' for better days”

-- Jimmy Buffett, Floridays
