UFC finally gives 'Cyborg' title shot, strips Germaine de Randamie of 145-pound belt
Cris 'Cyborg' Justino will fight Megan Anderson for the featherweight title at UFC 214
UFC has had enough. After winning the inagural women's featherweight title in February, Germaine de Randamie has been stripped of the belt with UFC giving Cris "Cyborg" Justino her shot against Megan Anderson at UFC 214.
Cyborg had been begging to get her shot to fight on the July card with the only hesitation being if she could get cleared from her positive USADA test earlier in the year. Cyborg said she wanted to fight for the belt, but even if she didn't fight de Randamie, she wanted to take on Anderson.
De Randamie has only held the title for 128 days, but it is still not the shortest reign for a female champ as Holly Holm and Miesha Tate held the 135-pound belt for shorter periods of time. She also came out last month and said she was planning to undergo hand surgery and wouldn't be able to fight until this fall on top of the fact that she said her next fight would come at 135 pounds, something she said UFC promised her wouldn't be an issue when she fought Holm in February for the inaugural title.
"UFC has informed Germaine de Randamie and her management team that she is being removed as the women's featherweight champion due to her unwillingness to fight the No. 1 ranked contender, Cris 'Cyborg' Justino," UFC said in a statement. "UFC maintains that any champion is expected to accept fights against the top contenders in their respective weight classes in order to maintain the integrity of the sport."
De Randamie, however, claims she was not told about the decision to be stripped of her belt.
"I had absolutely no idea that I was being stripped of the belt," de Randamie said via MMAFighting.com. "I found out through social media. Cyborg (Justino) is going to fight Megan (Anderson) for the belt. Nobody ever told me anything about it."
Cyborg is 17-1-1 in her professional MMA career. Since joining UFC in 2016, she has scored knockout wins over Lina Lansberg and Leslie Smith. Anderson last fought in January for Invicta Fighting Championship where she won the featherweight title with a second-round TKO of Charmaine Tweet.
Cyborg vs. Anderson joins Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier as the co-main event for UFC 214 in Anaheim, California on July 29.
