Richmond pole to Mark Martin
CAPITAL CITY 400 STARTING LINEUP
Mark Martin backed up his fast practice sessions by winning the pole for Saturday night's Capital City 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
Martin was the final car to qualify in Friday's session and promptly turned a lap of 128.327 mph to earn the number one starting spot for the ninth race of the Sprint Cup Series season.
"I can't say enough about this race team and that car," said Martin, who has five career Richmond poles earning the first one in 1981. "We were fast in practice and it was good to back that up with this qualifying effort. I'm looking forward to having a good night on Saturday."
He bumped Carl Edwards from the points with the run and the Roush Fenway Racing driver will start outside the front row.
"We haven't been very good in qualifying for about the last month and Jack (Roush) said he has quit giving me advice because he thought that was part of it," said Edwards. "But he hasn't said anything in about a month and I asked if he had any advice and he said, ‘No sir, I am not saying anything.' But he is happy. We are happy."
Kevin Harvick, A.J. Allmendinger and Kyle Busch rounded out the first five qualifiers.
Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Kasey Kahne andDale Earnhardt Jr. completed the first ten.
Saturday night's Capital City 400 is slated for a 7:30 p.m. ET green flag.
