Power Rankings: Little going right for Gibbs trio

Three races into the Chase and the Joe Gibbs Racing trio of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart are embedded at the bottom of the standings.

"We were 25 laps into it and he thought the motor was doing what it did last week and coming apart," said Busch's crew chief, Steve Addington. "That wasn't it. It was a fuel issue. We came in, checked all the lines and everything, and couldn't find anything.
"We'll go back (to the shop) and just dissect the whole car to see what the problem was and see if we can find anything."
Now wallowing back in 12th, 311 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson, Busch is despondent, while Addington is dumbfounded as to what has gone wrong. Perhaps there's a gremlin in the 18 team's garage.
"This is the first time (this problem has happened)," Addington said. "There's a first time for everything (that has happened) the last three weeks."
Stewart had run OK during the first two legs of the Chase with finishes of eighth and 11th and he was having another solid, if unspectacular, run Sunday until contact while trying to pass Brian Vickers sent him spinning through the infield. The splitter at the front of his car plowed through the grass, breaking the braces that hold it together.
Unfortunately, fixing it isn't a quick job. After his team fashioned a repair part, they had to call him in under green and lost six laps piecing it back together. At Kansas, not a track known for attrition, it resulted in a 40th-place finish and dropped him from seventh to 11th in the standings, 255 points behind Johnson.
The best of the JGR bunch Sunday was Hamlin, who finished 11th. A nice run, yes, but he still lost ground in the standings and finds himself 10th in points, 243 back.
You see, while Hamlin's car survived Kansas without incident, he wasn't as fortunate a week ago at Dover, where he finished 38th courtesy of a broken drive shaft.
The way Hamlin sees things, the failures JGR has endured the past few weeks aren't really anything new.
"I've had bad luck all year," Hamlin said. "I'm used to it."

| The Richard Petty Motorsports driver didn't join the first-time winners list as many predicted but did elevate his game from last year when he was part of the uncertainty surrounding the race team. | Had one of the fastest cars of the weekend at Homestead, which was a pleasant surprise for Earnhardt who has struggled at the track during his career. Ultimately he wasn't able to challenge for the win and will carry his victory drought into 2012.
