Ken Berger's 2010 Rookie Challenge Preview
By Ken Berger

Over the years, this is become my hands-down favorite among the preliminary events. My all-time favorite was '97 in Cleveland, before the format was changed from the rookie game to rookies vs. sophomores. That year, future Hall of Famers Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson dueled for MVP honors, which went to Iverson as the East rookies beat the West 96-91. The context for that rookie game will never be matched -- and not just because Bryant (ankle) and Iverson (personal reasons) pulled out of the All-Star Game on Thursday. Against the backdrop of the league unveiling its 50 Greatest Players, the rookie game was a coming-out party for the next generation of stars, sparking debate about whether the NBA would survive the post-Michael Jordan era. I'd say things worked out pretty well in that regard. The rookies will be trying to end a seven-game losing streak to the sophomores despite not having the top two picks in the 2009 draft -- Blake Griffin (injured) and Hasheem Thabeet (not good) -- and five of the top 10. Obvious snubs: Denver's Ty Lawson and Toronto's DeMar DeRozan. For the sophs, Golden State's Anthony Morrow was named to replace Derrick Rose, who was selected as an All-Star for the main event on Sunday.
