Video: Bernard James is welcomed to the NBA with 'U-S-A!' chant

By Royce Young | NBA writer

Bernard James served six years in the United States Air Force, taking three tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and Qatar.

When he heard his name called by Adam Silver with the 33rd pick, he walked to the podium with his new Cleveland Cavaliers hat as fans showered him with a "U-S-A! U-S-A!" chant.

Draft fans in Newark have a history of busting out the "U-S-A!" chant, but it's often in a sarcastic, tasteless manner when an international player is picked. This time? They nailed it.

There are often emotional moments on draft night as dreams come true and great stories are told. But nothing sent chills up your spine quite like that. At 27 years old, James is headed to the NBA. Standing ovation.
