The deal makes a ton of sense for both sides. Brewer, despite being a good defender, was largely stuck on the bench in Chicago, because if they wanted wing defense, Tom Thibodeau had Luol Deng to play 40 minutes, and at two-guard they needed scoring to balance out. Brewer gives the Knicks a wing defender who can body players at either the 2 or 3 and if necessary knock down some threes.
It gives the Knicks that much more depth, a sore spot last season as they struggled the past two seasons finding consistent rotations. But with Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, and Brewer off the bench, they have some versatility and players who are ready to contribute. And on a one-year deal as reported by Aldridge, it means if Brewer doesn't work out they can head in a different direction in a hurry.
