Deron Williams does not speak to reporters after loss to Cavs

By Matt Moore | NBA writer
The Nets had it. And then it slipped away.

And that's the story of how the Nets almost had Dwight Howard.

The same thing happened to the Nets Monday night in their 105-100 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday. A lack of execution late meant a turnover and Williams missed another shot late and his 28 points and 8 assists were for nothing. It was rough. The Nets lost Dwight Howard, a first-round draft pick in what many consider a desperation trade for Gerald Wallace (who had 27 points and 12 rebounds), and then a game to the Cavs inside of five days.

So, tonight, for just one night, Williams bailed.

Things weren't much better for Dwight Howard, Williams' prospective-once-and-never running mate who was clocked in Orlando by Chicago without Derrick Rose. But Williams is suffering the worst season of his career on multiple levels, most importantly in the wins column. This is just one game, but it's indicative of a trend we're seeing in which Williams has become more and more frustrated as the season has gone on.

Williams said before the season started that there was a 90 percent chance he re-signs with the Nets this summer. He recently confirmed he will not opt-in as Dwight Howard did for next season. It's going to be really interesting to see what Williams decides. He basically has to choose between money and winning. Because the Nets can still get Dwight Howard but it's going to get more and more difficult with the Nets in this position and as their roster assets continue to lose value.

Good news? That pick they sent Portland for Wallace is top-three protected, so if they tank they can keep that. I'm sure that comforts Williams.

Then again, maybe he just really wanted to get something to eat after the game. These things happen.
