By Ben Golliver | Blogger

Stephon Marbury went to China to escape and he wound up winning a championship.

Marbury, starring for the Beijing Ducks, won the Chinese Basketball Association's Finals on Friday, defeating the Guangdong Southern Tigers in the best-of-7 series, 4 games to 1. It was Beijing's first title in franchise history.

Chinadaily.com has the details.
Beijing Ducks, led by former NBA star Stephon Marbury who notched game-high 41 points on Friday night, clinched their first-ever title of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league.

Edging defending champions Guangdong Hongyuan 124-121 at home, Beijing Ducks, who entered the finals for the first time, won 4-1 on aggregate in the best-of-seven series. Guangdong had been crowned seven times in the past eight seasons.

With the breathtaking victory, Beijing Ducks became the fourth CBA title holder in 17 years, following eight-time winners Bayi Rockets, Shanghai Sharks and Guangdong Hongyuan.

"I still can't believe we won the title and I need some time to accept the fact. Before the new season was launched, the team had been confident in playing better, but it's been a mere dream to win the title for us," Beijing coach Min Lulei said after the tough duel.
The AFP reported Marbury's reaction.
"This has been incredible, it has been an incredible experience," a tearful Marbury said after winning his first major league championship.

"This shows what this team is made up of, everyone stepped up and everyone played their role. We have been blessed as a team."

Marbury was named player of the game after scoring 41 points, dishing 7 assists and grabbing 3 rebounds. After the final buzzer, Marbury sat on the court, was lifted into the air and cheered by his teammates and posed with the league's championship trophy.

Marbury, 35, last played in the NBA during the 2008-2009 season. A 2-time All-Star, Marbury posted career averages of 19.3 points, 7.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game during a 13-year career that included stops with the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.

Marbury signed to play in the Chinese Basketball Association in 2010.
