Report: Dwight Howard to sit out playoffs

By Matt Moore | NBA writer
WKMG Channel 6 in Orlando, the same outlet that reported Dwight Howard had asked for Magic management to fire Stan Van Gundy (which Van Gundy confirmed the day after), is reporting more trouble for the Magic. Not only has Howard not backed off his wishes for Van Gundy to be fired, he is incensed by Van Gundy's public confirmation of the request. But more important? The station reports Howard is likely to sit out the playoffs as well.

Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore has learned through NBA and Orlando Magic sources that Dwight Howard does not want to play for head coach Stan Van Gundy any longer.

According to his sources, Howard is still upset with Van Gundy confirming Pingalore's report from earlier this month that Howard went to Magic management asking for Van Gundy to be fired.

...

Howard would also likely sit out the postseason, according to Pingalore's report.

Pingalore has a reputation for explosive reports about the team, but was spot-on with his report on Howard's request to fire Van Gundy, considering Van Gundy confirmed the same.

Without Howard, there's no point in the Magic even making the playoffs. Crazy things happen in sports, anything can happen, that's why they play the games, etc. But without Howard, the Magic would not have anything resembling a realistic shot at winning a playoff series, or even being competitive. They would be better off gambling with the lottery.

Too bad the Magic have already clinched a playoff berth.

Howard's less than a week into treatment for his herniated disk in his back, so there's lots of time for his condition and/or outlook to change. But in a Magic season that has been punctuated by a rollercoaster of emotions, the final dive appears to be next.
