Report: Hawks F Josh Smith (knee sprain) is 'doubtful' for Game 3 vs. Celtics

By Ben Golliver | Blogger

The Atlanta Hawks could be without star forward Josh Smith for Game 3 against the Boston Celtics on Friday.

Smith suffered a left knee sprain during the fourth quarter of Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first round playoff series on Tuesday night after absorbing a blow from behind from Celtics forward Kevin Garnett.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reportsthat Smith, who underwent an MRI on Wednesday, is "doubtful" to play in Game 3 because of the injury and provided these details.
The person said Smith has patellar tendonitis with inflammation in the injured area but an MRI revealed no structural damage. If Smith misses Game 3 he likely would return for Game 4 Sunday in Boston, according to the person.
The Hawks officially listed Smith as "day-to-day" with the injury.

Smith left Game 2 with 4:20 remaining in the fourth quarter and Atlanta training 74-72. Smith departed with a line of 16 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks on 8-for-21 shooting in 36 minutes.

"I don't know much," Hawks coach Larry Drew said after the game on Tuesday night. "I know he did hurt it. I went in the back to see him afterwards. We'll know more after he's examined."

The Celtics went on to take Game 2, 87-80, to even the series at one game apiece.
