Report: Mavericks to make offer to restricted free agent Roy Hibbert

By Matt Moore | NBA writer
The Mavericks are going to have some cap room to play with this summer and just in case Deron Williams doesn't work out, they're making some coningency plans. Including, reportedly, Pacers center Roy Hibbert. reports that the Mavericks have it in mind to make a significant offer to Hibbert who is a restricted free agent this summer. ESPN radio in Dallas reports that the Mavericks expect the Pacers to match any offer, but are going through the motions regardless.

It's an interesting concept for the Mavericks, who learned with Tyson Chandler that they need a seven-foot presence at the rim to pair with Dirk Nowitzki, and who still have questions about Ian Mahinmi. Center Brendan Haywood is struggling with injury but still has close to $38 million in contract left on his deal. Haywood has three more seasons guaranteed.

The Mavericks are expected to make a big push for Deron Williams in free agency, but also are said to be mindful of the repeater tax which will hit them in 2015 should they fail to get under the tax threshold at least one season. Hibbert is likely to demand low eight figures on his next deal, coming off a strong postseason where he helped push the Heat to six games.

While there are questions about Hibbert's overall productivity and aggression inside, he was an All-Star for the first time this season and in a league short on quality centers, he'll have tremendous value, even in restricted free agency.
