Boston Mayor: 'KJ and Hondo' are keys to Celtics beating Heat

By Ben Golliver | Blogger

The Miami Heat stand no chance on Thursday night thanks to the unstoppable pair of Kevin Johnson and John Havlicek. Wait. What?

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino got a little confused when breaking down the Eastern Conference finals between his city's Celtics and the Miami Heat.

"There's a lot of heart on this team," Menino said in recent comments caught on camera. "Let me just tell you. KJ is great but Hondo is really the inspiration. Hondo drives that team. I'm really pleased what's happened the last few nights."

"KJ" was the nickname of former Phoenix Suns point guard Kevin Johnson, who retired in 2000 and is now the Mayor of Sacramento. Menino obviously meant to refer to All-Star forward Kevin Garnett, 21.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks against the Heat, who is often referred to by his initials "KG."

"Hondo" was the nickname of Havlicek, a Hall of Fame Celtics guard who retired in 1978. Menino obviously was referring to All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo, who is averaging 20.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 11.0 assists and 1.8 steals against the Heat.

Later Thursday, Menino, who has a history with messing up the names of Boston athletes, posted an apology on Twitter: "You know it's championship season when I flub our athletes' names! Sorry KG & Rondo, it's kind of my thing- another Menino-ism! Go Celtics!"

The Celtics have won three straight games to take a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 is set for Thursday night at TD Garden. Should the Celtics win, they would advance to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals.
