Hornets G Austin Rivers undergoes surgery for bone spurs in ankle

By Ben Golliver | Blogger

Less than a month after taking the stage at the 2012 NBA Draft, one lottery pick hit the operating table.

The New Orleans Hornets announced on Friday that guard Austin Rivers, the No. 10 pick in last month's Draft, underwent successful surgery to "clean up bone spurs in his right ankle."

Rivers, 19, is expected to be ready to go for fall training camp.

The procedure was conducted by Celtics team doctor Brian McKeon in Boston. Rivers, of course, is the son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

Rivers appeared in just two games during the 2012 Las Vegas Summer League for the Hornets, averaging 10.0 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 32.0 minutes per game.

A one-and-done scoring guard out of Duke University, Rivers has been tabbed by the Hornets as their point guard of the future. He averaged 15.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game during his freshman season as a Blue Devil.
