Reports: Knicks sign J.R. Smith's brother, Chris, to training camp contract

By Ben Golliver | Blogger

J.R. Smith agreed to a contract that was well below market value with the New York Knicks but, hey, at least he got a parting gift.

The Knicks have reportedly signed Smith's brother, guard Chris Smith, to a training camp contract, according to Newsday and the New York Post. Specifics of the deal aren't yet available but it's likely a typical non-guaranteed deal that provides the player an opportunity to impress during the fall preseason.

Smith, 24, averaged 5.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 19.4 minutes for New York's Las Vegas Summer League team. He came off the bench in all five games. Smith, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 9.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists for Lousville last season.

The Knicks roster is currently at 14 players, with 13 on guaranteed contracts. Given that New York already has Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and Pablio Prigioni at Smith's position, it's unlikely that he winds up making the cut. But a chance is a chance and this is New York, where dreams are made, after all. Might as well give nepotism a shot.
