WNBA player breaks nose of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton during scrimmage

By Ben Golliver | Blogger

Gas prices, housing prices, taxes, the unemployment rate. It's all enough to make you want to sock a politician in the nose, am I right? If so, Nakia Sanford is your hero of the day.

CBSNews.com reports that Sanford, a forward on the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, broke the nose of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton by elbowing him in the face during a scrimmage on Monday.

Video of the incident shows Stanton helplessly trying to play post defense before getting beaten to the basket for a lay-up attempt. The shot missed and Stanton then caught a stray elbow to the face in the ensuing rebounding scrum, crashing off camera towards the baseline while holding his nose.

CBS News offered the following additional details.

He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for a CT scan and it was determined his nose is fractured in two places.

Stanton's office says he's in good spirits and will meet with a doctor to determine if further care is required. The mayor issued a statement saying "injuries are just part of the game — they're battle wounds."

Stanton had a sense of humor about the incident, writing on his Facebook page: "Thanks to the Mercury and their trainer Tamara Poole. I can't wait to see them back in action on Aug. 19 and I'm glad I will be watching from the stands this time!"

Of course, as only a politician could, Stanton managed to turn the event into a bit of self-promotion, posting the video and multiple pictures on social media sites and by bragging on his Facebook page: "My nose and I made it all the way to TMZ."

With that post, Stanton became the first non-Kardashian in the history of the world to be excited by being the subject of a TMZ item.

Sanford, 35, is in her tenth WNBA season and holds career averages of 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. She was not quoted as saying, "Mr. Mayor, don't bring that weak [blank] to my house and expect to go home without bleeding," but she should have been.
