Stephen Curry says he'll be ready for season opener

After injuring his surgically-repaired ankle in a preseason game against the Portland Trail Blazers last Friday, Stephen Curry was shut down by the Golden State Warriors for the rest of the preseason as a precautionary measure.

Now that the guard has gotten some rest and been able to get healthier, Curry feels confident he'll play in the season opener against the Phoenix Suns on Halloween (via CSN Bay Area):

Warriors point guard Stephen Curry sat out all of Thursday's practice, but Jackson said that was no big deal.

“We're just continuing to play it smart,” Jackson said of Curry. “We don't need him today. It's making sure he's ready when it matters most. But it's just precautionary reasons.”

Curry, who missed 40 games last season because of ankle issues, said he will be ready for the opener.

With the struggles Curry has endured from his bad ankle the last two years, it seems pretty natural for him to be itching to play in the season opener. The Warriors have made the right move by keeping him out of meaningless preseason games after he turned his ankle last week, but it's going to be a lot tougher to tell him he can't play when the games matter again.

The Warriors are already going to be without center Andrew Bogut, who has yet to play a game for the Warriors in the regular season or preseason since he was acquired last season.

Starting the season without Curry and Bogut available isn't an ideal way to begin the new campaign.

Another aspect of this injury is the potential impact it could have on hammering out an extension for Curry before the Oct. 30 deadline. When healthy, Curry has shown he should be considered for a max contract coming off of his rookie deal. However, he hasn't truly been healthy since his rookie season. He battled ankle injuries during his sophomore campaign and eventually had surgery in the offseason during 2011.

With Curry once again showing a proneness to ankle injuries, will it make it harder for the Warriors and Curry to settle on a contract figure so he avoids restricted free agency in 2013?
