Grizzlies hire Jason Levien as CEO, managing partner

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

The Grizzlies announced Sunday that former agent, 76ers owner and current MLS DC United owner Jason Levien has joined the team as CEO and managing partner of the team in the aftermath of Robert Pera and Co. taking ownership last week via USA Today.

Levien has done, well, a lot. From his bio provided by the Grizzlies, Levien has been:

  • A clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit;
  • An attorney at Williams & Connolly and Greenberg Traurig LP;
  • Adjunct professor at the University of California Berkeley Law School and at the University of Michigan;
  • A sports agent;
  • An executive with the Kings;
  • An owner of the Philadelphia 76ers;
  • An owner of the MLS club DC United.
So he has been a busy guy. Levien is expected to oversee both the team's business department and basketball operations. General manager Chris Wallace is expected to be retained, and no changes are expected for the department other than Levien taking over. We've said that before, when new ownership takes over, though, so we'll have to see how it works out.
It's another strong sign of change from the ownership group. The Grizzlies have downsized their organization over the past few years, and this seems to support the idea that there will be more infrastructure to the team.
It'll be interesting to see how Levien impacts the team and what, if any, changes will be made to how things are run.
