Report: Hornets to announce new nickname, logo and colors Thursday

By Royce Young | NBA writer

Any remaining doubt or mystery surrounding the New Orleans Hornets and their potential nickname change will be put to rest Thursday.

According to Yahoo Sports, the organization will formally announce the name transition to Pelicans, intended to take place for the 2013-14 season. Along with the new nickname, the team will reveal new logos and colors as well.

The colors will reportedly be blue, gold and red.

The Hornets brought their nickname with them when former owner George Shinn relocated the franchise from Charlotte in 2002. But under new local owner Tom Benson, the organization wants to embed itself a little more directly with its community and city.

The pelican is the Louisiana state bird and was the name of a minor-league baseball team that played in New Orleans from 1889 to 1959, so it has direct ties to the city and state.

The organization reportedly filed for five name trademarks: Pelicans, Mosquitos, Swamp Dogs, Bullsharks and Rougarou.

(For the record, I was firmly on Team Rougarou, which is a beast from Louisiana folklore that has been passed from oral traditions to be a werewolf-like-blood-seeking monster. Alas.)

The next nickname riddle to be solved is whether the Charlotte Bobcats will reclaim their rightful name of Hornets now that it will be available.
