The Raptors have been known as the team most actively pursuing Rudy Gay for some time. ESPN reports the Grizzlies and Raptors have engaged in active talks to send the Grizzlies forward north of the border.
The Memphis Grizzlies continue to field calls from teams interested in Rudy Gay and are engaged in active trade discussions with the Toronto Raptors, sources with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com.
Although the framework of a workable trade has not yet been established, sources told ESPN.com that Toronto -- known to be perhaps Gay's most determined suitor -- has continued to make a hard push for the swingman.
But sources say that the Raptors, undaunted by that stance, continue to pursue Gay and also covet Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur. Toronto, sources said, has made veteran point guard Jose Calderon and blossoming young forward Ed Davis available as the two cornerstones of its offer.
After the Grizzlies' cost-saving trade a week ago sent Wayne Ellington, Marreesse Speights and Josh Selby to Cleveland, the Grizzlies have needed depth. That's been even more apparent with Mike Conley out two games with an ankle injury. Calderon would solve multiple issues for Memphis, giving them a shooter and backup point guard, allowing Jerryd Bayless to play combo gaurd and focus on defense.
Davis would be the prize for Memphis player-wise. Losing Darrell Arthur would hurt its ability to stretch the floor, but Davis would help with rebounding and is a versatile forward.
Toronto obviously needs a star and is willing to take on Gay's massive contract at the chance he lives up to it. But what becomes of talented rookie Terrence Ross in that situation?
The moves continue to percolate and questions about a possible trade of Gay to the Celtics for Paul Pierce float. The trade winds, they are a blowing.
