Dwight Howard traveled to Los Angeles on Friday in the midst of the Lakers' road trip to receive a platelet-rich plasma treatment for his injured shoulder. He missed the Lakers' win over the Wolves and was expected to rejoin the team Saturday, and be day-to-day after that. Well, all that happened, and the Los Angeles Times reports more good news for the Lakers:
Lakers center Dwight Howard is expected to play Sunday against Detroit after making a quick trip to Los Angeles for a minor shoulder procedure.
"He's going to give it a go," said a person familiar with the situation.
ESPN reports that coach Mike D'Antoni expects it to be a matter of pain management, whether Howard goes or not:
"I'm not counting [on Howard playing], but I hope," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We're ready to go if not, but if [he can play] that would help, obviously."
"It's just a matter if there's pain, he won't play," D'Antoni said. "If the pain has lessened a lot, then I think he'll play."
The Lakers need Howard back, obviously. After all the talk of how Pau Gasol needs to play down low, he had the most success Friday against the Wolves from mid-range. More importantly, Gasol's pick-and-roll coverage and ability to protect the rim is kind of a wreck. We'll see what kind of Howard the Lakers get back Sunday vs. Detroit.
