Metta World Peace suspended one game for altercation with Knight

By Royce Young | NBA writer

Metta World Peace has been suspended one game without pay for "grabbing Detroit's Brandon Knight around the neck and striking him in the jaw," the league announced Tuesday.

World Peace will serve his suspension Tuesday night against the Nets.

The incident happened in Sunday's game in Detroit with 1:43 remaining in the second quarter. Knight and World Peace tangled on the play, with World Peace wrapping his right arm around Knight's neck and then throwing a small uppercut with his left hand.

Here's what Brandon Knight said after the game, via the Detroit Free Press:

“The play needs to be reviewed because he definitely threw a punch,” Knight said. “It felt like he threw a punch. That's why I reacted the way I did.

“The play was over and he grabbed me around the neck. If someone grabs you around the neck, you're not just going to let that happen. You do what you need to get that person off you.”

This is the 15th suspension of World Peace's career but only the fifth since the infamous brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills (which is ironically where this incident happened). Most recently, World Peace was suspended seven games for elbowing James Harden in the head last April.

World Peace, 33, is averaging 13.2 points and 5.7 rebounds on the season. A one-game suspension will cost him about $66,000.
