Report: Nets want J.J. Hickson

You start to get the feeling the Nets are trying to do something just to do something. That's the only thing that you can take away from their latest trade rumor, which links them to Portland's center J.J. Hickson. From the New York Daily News:

The Daily News later reported the Nets "pushed back" on the report but, you know, that's what teams do when trade rumors come out. It's impossible to differentiate actual denials from "appropriate" denials.

Hickson's season has been... odd. He has fallen off completely from when he was considered a huge part of Cleveland's rebuild. But he has had a surprisingly solid season. He's neither as good as many Blazers fans attribute him to be nor as bad as his worst critics contend. He has improved in rebounding and in small ways in terms of offensive flow and defense.

But why would the Nets need him? They're going to trade MarShon Brooks and sacrifice their backcourt depth to add another hustle-rebounder who's only a marginal upgrade over Kris Humphries (and Humphries might just be having a down season) or Reggie Evans?

The Nets seem to feel it imperative to add another big. Their defense has been the issue and, in reality, that's a scheme problem as much as it is personnel. And it won't get fixed overnight. They certainly seem to want to act just to act. Money can't solve everything.
