Mavericks elect not to re-sign Chris Wright

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

There's little room in professional sports for feel-good stories. You can play or you can't. And unfortunately for Chris Wright, he wasn't able to make enough of an impact with the Mavericks to stick around.

The first NBA player with diagnosed multiple sclerosis did not receive another 10-day contract from the Mavericks.

Coach Rick Carlisle informed Wright of the team's decision after Friday night's win over the Boston Celtics, when the D-League all-star's 10-day deal expired. The Mavericks next will sign guard Justin Dentmon from their own D-League affiliate to a 10-day deal, most likely finalizing a contract with the Texas Legends' leading scorer Monday, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Wright has enough talent that he should get another call-up this season, or a spot on a summer league team to open up another chance to make the team. But Mark Cuban was adamant earlier this season when they signed him that his condition wasn't going to factor into any decision making.

“Chris obviously is mentally tough,” owner Mark Cuban wrote in an email. “But more importantly he is a good PG. We think he has a shot to be good in the NBA, so we wanted to give him a shot. The fact that he has MS is irrelevant. He can play.”

He can, just not enough for the Mavs to stick with him. The Mavs are still looking at players who could give them a boost as they make one more desperate push for the playoffs.
