Celtics buy full-page ad in Globe to thank Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

Paul Pierce spent 15 years in a Celtics uniform. Fifteen. Years. The last time that Pierce was not in a Celtics uniform, Total Request Live was still on MTV. Limp Bizkit was still a thing. The Chicago Bulls were defending champs. No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett was 5 years old.

So it was a long time.

Kevin Garnett was with the Celtics for just five seasons but indelibly left his mark. He was an icon, more so than players who had spent more seasons there. He truly meant something to the team and the city's love affair with it.

On Friday, the Celtics took time to thank the two future Hall of Famers. This full-page ad ran in the Boston Globe.

It's a little weird to thank the two side by side. Pierce meant so much more to the franchise, had done so much more. He was "The Captain." He dealt with the struggles of the mid-2000's. He gave Boston significant playoff runs for the first time in almost a decade.

Garnett certainly deserves the gratitude, but to put them together kind of lowers the impact of what it means for Pierce. That said, you can bet in a few years that both guys' jerseys will be hanging in TD Garden.

Garnett and Pierce were traded to Brooklyn on draft night in exchange for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and a bevy of future draft picks.
