Mavericks' Shane Larkin breaks ankle, out 2-3 months

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

This stuff just seems cruel sometimes.

Shane Larkin, the Mavericks' talented first-round draft pick, broke his ankle in summer-league practice of all things and, according to Yahoo Sports, he will be out 2-3 months.

Larkin, a 5-foot-11 guard out of Miami drafted No. 18 overall in June's draft, was expected to serve as third point guard for the Mavericks behind starter Jose Calderon and free-agent signing Devin Harris, who is also injured and has scrapped a three-year deal with Dallas. Without Harris and Larkin, the Mavericks are down to just Calderon and Israeli rookie Gal Mekel at the point guard spot.

That means Monta Ellis, who the Mavs reached an agreement with in free agency Friday, will most likely spend time at point guard. And then Rick Carlisle's soul died, just a little.

For Larkin, it's just brutal, despite his admirably good attitude. Rookies have a hard time in this league, especially point guards, especially point guards under Rick Carlisle. The odds are stacked against the diminutive playmaker early on.
