Report: Byron Mullens, Clippers agree on two-year, $2M contract

By Zach Harper | NBA writer

The Los Angeles Clippers have had a fantastic offseason by retaining Chris Paul, getting Doc Rivers to coach the team, and adding J.J. Redick, Jared Dudley, and Darren Collison to their rotation. They have plenty of depth on the wing now with Jamal Crawford and Matt Barnes also at their disposal, but don't really have adequate depth for the interior to back up Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.

The team may be finally addressing this issue. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Clippers and free-agent big man Byron Mullens have agreed to a two-year contract for $2 million. The four-year veteran would probably become the first big man off the bench, unless the team wants to go small with a small stretch-4. From the report:

Free-agent 7-footer Byron Mullens has reached agreement on a two-year, $2 million contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Mullens will hold a player's option for the second year of the deal, a source said.

There aren't many options out there in terms of adding quality interior depth at this point in the offseason, especially if you're factoring in adding quality defensive players. The Clippers could wait for Marcus Camby to make a decision, but if he ends up choosing a team like the Houston Rockets and then Mullens is gone, you risk going even deeper into the barrel of free-agent big men.

Mullens is a very active, mobile big man who can play both the power forward and center positions. But that's pretty much where the positives end with him. He's married to the outside shot after taking 208 3-pointers for the Charlotte Bobcats last season, shooting just 31.7 percent from downtown and 38.5 percent overall from the field. His rebounding isn't anything to clamor over either.

I would imagine the Clippers are banking on Mullens passing on his player option next summer, considering he can sign for the minimum contract just about anywhere. If he shows some promise and progression on both sides of the floor next season, it could benefit both parties involved.
