Report: Gerald Henderson nearing three-year deal with Bobcats

By Royce Young | NBA writer

Gerald Henderson is staying put in Charlotte.

According to Yahoo Sports, Henderson is close to a three-year deal with the Bobcats worth $18 million.

The third year is a player option.

Henderson, a restricted free agent, curiously had not drawn interest on the open market at all, and ended up taking what seems to be a discounted deal to remain with the Bobcats.

Henderson, 25, has been a very solid player with the Bobcats the past four seasons. He was drafted by them 12th overall and has kind of become the face of the franchise, in a weird way. Last season he was very good, averaging 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 45 percent from the field.

According to the report, Henderson had an offer of around $7 million per season, but turned that down for the player option on the third season.

In a watered down market for guards, it was a bit odd that Henderson wasn't drawing bigger offers and more interest, but in the end he was able to work out a deal to stay with the Bobcats. He's a quality player that fills a position of need for Charlotte, and adds to an improved roster.
