The support behind NBA players participating in international tournaments has always been a bit spotty. NBA owners and executives are usually a little wary of their employees playing in these tournaments because there is a risk of injury that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the organization that pays them and there's often little to zero care from the NBA team's medical and training staffs in the process.

The New York Knicks won't have to worry about that with newly acquired big man Andrea Bargnani who was slated to play for the Italian National Team in September during EuroBasket. Bargnani has reportedly contracted pneumonia and isn't likely to recover in time to be ready for EuroBasket. According to Sportando.net, Bargnani is out from EuroBasket becauseof the illness and lack of recovery time.

Andrea Bargnani is officially out from Eurobasket. Il Mago caught pneumonia a few days ago but he won't be able to play in Slovenia with Italian National Team. Bargnani's condition is improving but he cannot recover on time for September 4 when Eurobasket will star.

It's a shame that Bargnani won't be able to play for Italy in EuroBasket because his last two international stints for his home country were quite impressive. In the 2010 EuroBasket qualifiers, Bargnani averaged 24.1 points in 30.6 minutes to go along with 6.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. He made 52.4 percent from the field and 36.7 percent from 3-point range in Italy's eight games. In 2011 EuroBasket, Bargnani averaged 22.8 points and 7.4 rebounds in 34.2 minutes. He shot 46.2 percent from the field in five games of that tournament.

The Knicks most likely won't have to worry much about his training being on schedule, unless the pneumonia gets worse and he's not back working out any time soon. They acquired Bargnani in July by trading two second round picks, a future first round pick, Steve Novak, Marcus Camby, and Quentin Richardson.
