Kevin Garnett says he would have retired if separated from Paul Pierce

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

So Nets forward Kevin Garnett's doing the "marketing in China" thing and while there, in an interview with Sina Sports, KG says that if he had been traded from the Celtics and separated from Paul Pierce, he would not have waived his no-trade clause, and would have retired.

Moderator: Can you say if the transaction object is only you, no Pierce, you would choose to reject it?

Garnett: I would refuse, if I was traded away, I would choose to retire, without a doubt, I would choose a direct retired.

So that's sweet.

Pierce said over the summer that he had to call Garnett to talk him into abandoning Rondo leaving the Celtics for the Nets in a draft-night deal. So this checks out. It shows you how close the two have become. It's still weird to see Pierce in a Nets jersey, but if that was the price of a few more years of KG screaming and barking, it was worth it.

It also shows you how close Garnett is to retirement, though. He considered it after the 2012 season. He considered it after last season. How much longer does he really have it in his body and soul to keep going?

Because for all the talk of Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady's retirement these last few weeks, Garnett's retirement is going to mean something much more intense.
