Report: Heat interested in signing Michael Beasley

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

They say you can never go home again. But you may be able to smoke there.

Yahoo Sports reports that the Miami Heat are interested in signing free agent Michael Beasley who was waived by the Suns earlier this week. Beasley was drafted by the Heat in 2008 and spent two seasons with the Heat before being traded to the Timberwolves as part of the Heat's efforts to make room to sign LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

The two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat are considering the possibility of bringing back troubled free-agent forward Michael Beasley, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Several of the Heat's key veteran players are supportive of the signing of Beasley, and he has a strong interest in returning to the franchise responsible for taking him with the second overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, sources told Yahoo.

No offer has been made and no deal is considered imminent, sources said.

Beasley was arrested in Arizona earlier this month on marijuana possession and was reportedly under investigation for sexual assault in May. He averaged 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists last season, on 10 field goal attempts per game at 41 percent shooting last year for the Suns.

The Heat are in the unique position of having so much strength in the locker room and on the court, they don't have anything to risk by bringing in a player described a "toxic." They can gamble on Beasley's talent despite his issues the same way they can gamble on Greg Oden. There's no downside for them. We'll see if this deal shakes out and if Beasley can get himself right with a return to where his NBA career began.
